Unit-1

1. Design completely a belt drive to drive a winch from an electric motor of 11 kW power. Speed of motor shaft is 750 rev/min. Speed ratio is 4. Belt position is horizontal and there is considerable variation of load.

2. Write the design procedure for a chain drive 

Unit-2

3. Design a bevel gear drive between two shafts whose axes are at right angles. Speed of Pinion shaft is 240 r.p.m. and that of the gear shaft is 120 r.p.m. Pinion is to have 21 teeth of in volute profile with 20 mm module and pressure angle of 20° and is to be of suitable material. Gear is of cast iron. Power at gear shaft 75 kW.

7. Design a muff coupling to connect two shafts transmitting 18.75 kW at 1000 r.p.m. The allowable shear stress for shaft and key material is 55 N/m㎡ ?. Coupling is required to transmit 20% overload. The muff is made of cast iron for which allowable shear stress can be taken as 16 N/m㎡ ?.
